I had two conversations this morning on completely different subjects that both affirmed the same thing for me. There is an overwhelming body of evidence that congregations that focus on providing for themselves the wherewithal to continue to meet the needs of the saved while ignoring the opportunities to reach out with the saving message of the gospel to those dying in the dark around them will continue to diminish in both size and effectiveness.

Not only do those congregations fail to reach the lost, they consistently give off the message (hopefully unintended) that the lost are not welcome in their place. The language and style and much of the activities taking place in their buildings clearly articulate that what happens in the church is for the saved. Those places look less and less like the church described in the New Testament and more and more like any number of failed enterprises that ignore the warning signs and continue to do those things that lead to their eventual demise.

Challenge to that sort of status quo is coming from several different angels in the church. Those voices are trying hard to get the church to focus less on amassing greater numbers of members and more on reaching greater numbers of those who are lost in the dark. Those advocates are not proposing the kind of consumerist mentality that changes everything in the church to make it attractive to those who are not yet on the inside. They are raising the issue that church today really is facing a crisis in terms of its mission and ministry to those outside their fellowship.

Lots of people, it seems, are sincerely open to talk about Jesus. But there is resistance to the church and to Christians. If you believe this, what should we do about it? Most obviously there seems to be a disconnect that we have to address. If the church is to reflect Jesus in this world those who are attracted to Jesus should be attracted to the church, so either they aren't hearing what we are saying about Jesus correctly or what we say doesn't match up with what we do.

I would suggest it might be helpful to talk to those in your community, especially those who are not yet Christians, about what they see when they look at your congregation. Do they see the face of Jesus reflected in your place and if not, why not and what can you do about it? To have that conversation you will have to leave your building and very likely your comfort zone.

Believe me when I tell you I know firsthand how uncomfortable that is. I am one of the vilest offenders in that category. But the time is too short, the urgency is too great for us to be ruled any longer by our need for comfort. Finally, it isn't about us, it is about helping others see Jesus. If we say that is what we're all about, how hard can it be?

Together with you in Prayer, [Colossians 4:2-4]

As part of a massive effort to safeguard children across the nation, the federal government is providing private schools and preschools with free special-purpose radios that will alert officials to local weather hazards and other emergencies. Every religious and independent K-12 school and preschool in the country is slated to receive a radio sometime in September 2008.

To find out if your school is scheduled to recieve a Public Alert Radio go to http://public-alert-radio.nws.noaa.gov. In the Nonpublic School section, click on either "PreK" or "K-12". Click on "Continue to Radio License Acceptance." You will then be asked to insert your zip code to find out if your school is on the list. Many of our preschools and a few of our elementary schools are not listed. If you are not listed, follow the instructions on that link.
